The Guardian: Griekenland te ontvangen 30 miljoen toeristen!

tor

Auteur: Helena Smith, tjilpen: @HelenaSmithGDN

“Business is zeer goed,” says Labis Baxevanos, the village’s deputy mayor, who owns a patisserie along the strip. “So good that a lot of younger couples have come to work here since the country’s economic crisis began.”
Debt-stricken Greece is braced for a record-breaking 30m holidaymakers this year, almost three times its population. Addressing the Panhellenic Exporters Association last week, the tourism minister Elena Kountoura said that between January and May there had been a noticeable increase in arrivals, revenues and occupancy rates with summer bookings in some areas rising by as much as 70%. Travel receipts grew by 2.4% or €23m (£20m).
After eight years of grinding austerity, the influx is a tangible gift, on a par with the €8.5bn financial lifeline thrown Greece earlier this month to once again avert default.
Dimitsana – once famous for the gunpowder mills that produced the firepower in the nation’s 1821 war of independence against Ottoman rule – is emblematic of the entrepreneurial spirit taking root as a result of the boom. “Tourism is our lifejacket,” says Theonimfi Koraki, who opened a boutique hotel in the village last summer. “The aim now is diversity and drawing out the season all year round. Here in Arcadia the creation of the 75km-long Menalon [wandelen] trail has been hugely successful for example with foreign tourists. It has greatly helped the development of the region.”
With the exception of shipping, tourism is Greece’s biggest foreign earner, the mainstay of an economy that has otherwise contracted by 27% sinds eind 2009 when the country’s debt crisis began.
The industry accounted for eight out of 10 new jobs in 2016, vital for a nation hit by crippling levels of unemployment. Bank of Greece figures show around 23.5 miljoen toeristen bezocht in 2015, generating €14.2bn of revenues, of 24% van het bruto binnenlands product. Afgelopen jaar, the country’s tourism confederation, ZEVEN, announced arrivals of 27.5 miljoen, an all-time high.

THE LETTER

Dear Mr. Secretary,

We are writing to encourage continued active engagement by the State Department in the Eastern Mediterranean, en in het bijzonder een sterke houding tegen retoriek en provocaties die de geest van samenwerking en de vooruitgang die is ontstaan in de regio in de afgelopen jaren bedreigen dringen.

The burgeoning ties between Cyprus, Griekenland en Israël, moeten van bijzonder belang zijn voor de Verenigde Staten. Voorbij het delen van democratische waarden, de drie landen worden steeds meer samen in energie, terrorismebestrijding, and tourism—fields that can contribute to European energy independence, het bevorderen van economische stabiliteit in Zuid-Europa en het Midden-Oosten, en help de teller regionale extremisme en terrorisme.

Israel’s partnerships with Greece and Cyprus ensure the security of Israel’s Mediterranean border. Israel’s strategic depth has always been a challenge, nog meer dus nu, terwijl de regio ervaart verslechterende veiligheidssituatie. Griekenland en Cyprus zijn slechts de tweede en derde landen, after the U.S., with which Israel has signed a ‘status of forces agreement.’

Cooperation in the Eastern Mediterranean has the power to create partnerships where there was once conflict. Energy collaboration has facilitated and furthered important regional conversations. Consistente contacten op hoog niveau en trilaterale toppen betrekken andere regionale belanghebbenden, waaronder de EU, Italië, Egypte en Libanon, providing opportunities for diplomatic engagement between these nations—engagement that otherwise might not occur.

Verder, these new energy sources promise to allow key U.S. allies and partners to decrease their energy dependence on suppliers like Russia and Iran.
It is vital that the State Department continue active engagement in the region—not just for the benefit of the U.S and Israel—but because the cooperation facilitated by natural gas finds is not without challenges. Cyprus’s EEZ is safeguarded under international law and has been consistently supported by the United States government. There is also a long-standing dispute over which nation controls a maritime area off the coast of the Israel-Lebanon border.
With so much progress and potential at stake, we urge you to publicly reaffirm the commitment of the United States to support energy exploration and exploitation in the Eastern Mediterranean in a manner consistent with long-standing U.S. politiek.

Astypalaia_myloi_510_364

Located exactly where the Dodecanese meet the Cyclades, the island of Astypalaia boasts a centuries-old history, whitewashed villages and sun-drenched beaches. Embark on a fascinating trip where the deep blue of the sea meets the bright white colours of beautiful island houses…

Astypalaia, the westernmost island of the Group, is naturally separated into Mesa Nisi [the inner island] (western part) en Exo Nisi [the outer island] (eastern part) by a thin strip of land less than 100 m. wide.

The island was named after Astypalaia, the daughter of Phoenix and Perimede. In the old days the island was also called Ichthyoessa due to its abundant fishing grounds. It was first inhabited in prehistoric times. In 1204 it came under the Venetian rule enforced by the Guerini family until 1537 with the exception of a brief period in time (1269-1310) when the Byzantine Empire took over again. In 1537 the Turks occupied the island. As is the case with the other Dodecanese islands, Astypalaia remained under Turkish rule until 1912; it was then conquered by the Italians, the British, and the Germans until it was finally integrated in Greece in 1948. There are ferries to Piraeus and Kalymnos and flights to Athens and Rhodes Airports.

1. Chora
Chora
is the island’s capital town and port. It is one of the most picturesque towns in the Aegean, perched on a rock that advances into the sea, forming two bays. On the top, you will see Chora’s castle towering over the town with the strikingly white domes of Evangelistria and Agios Georgios churches, visible over the walls. Around the castle lie Chora’s houses with whitewashed walls, blue doors and windows, and wooden balcony rails.

Town promenade

  • To the Venetian Guerini Castle (13th c). The small three-storey houses built in the castle’s outer grounds are of particular architectural interest since the outer walls of the houses form the castle wall and narrow windows were used as battlements. Within the castle there are two churches, painted in a pure white colour, with elaborate stone belfries: Panagia Evangelistria (1853), inside which you will see the founders’ inscription dated 1413 and the Guerini coats of arms; en Agios Georgios.
  • To the 18th-century Panagia Portaitissa church below the castle, one of the most beautiful churches in the Dodecanese with a woodcarved, gilded iconostasis. Right next to it there is an interesting Ecclesiastical Museum.
  • To Narkisseios Municipal Library, also housing the island’s archeological collection.
  • To the Archeological Museum in Pera Gialos where finds from the island are on display. Most of them date back to the prehistoric times when Astypalaia had prospered.
  • To the eight windmills located over Skala, at Chora. They belong to the xetrocharis category, a horizontal axis type with the roof turning according to the wind direction.
  • To Kylintra, bordering Chora on the south side. It is the site where a burial ground for infants was excavated – the only one known to have existed in the whole world. This place was considered as sacred ground since the Geometric Period and up to the Hellenistic times.
  • To Megali Panagia. Its courtyard features a remarkable pebbled floor.
  • To Panagia Flevariotissa, 6 km NW of Chora. Part of the church is built inside a cave. It has an interesting woodcarved iconostasis.
  • To the Monastery of Agios Ioannis o Makrys (12 km W). It is built in an impressive landscape between two forbidding slopes, overlooking the open sea and offering a spectacular sunset view.
  • To the castle of Ai-Giannis, opposite the monastery by the same name.

Trips around Astypalaia

West (Inner Island)

2. Livadia
Livadia is a seaside village with few residents, built in a fertile valley. There are citrus fruit groves, vineyards and houses overflowing with flowers, creating a delightful setting next to a lovely beach. Distance from Chora: 2 km SW.

Must see

  • Negros cave, at Vatses (6 km SW). Access it by boat from Chora, or follow an organised tour.
  • Agios Vasileios hill and the ruins of an early-Christian basilica.

Oosten (Outer Island)

3. Maltezana (Analipsi)
Maltezana is a seaside resort that attracts most of the island’s tourism. It has been named after the Maltese pirates who made their hideout on the island. This is where the French Admiral Bigot set his ship on fire in 1827 so that it may not be captured by the pirates. Distance from Chora: 9 km NE.

Must see

  • Talaras Baths and their Hellenistic period mosaics that are unique in the Hellenic world coloured in light blue and brick shades as well as an interesting composition that depicts the four seasons and the symbols of the zodiac.
  • The monument of the French Admiral Bigot who led the struggle against the pirates in the early 19th century.
  • The ruins of an early-Christian basilica (5th c.) with remarkable mosaics. Agia Varvara chapel was built over those ruins using the existing Ionian capitals as building material.
  • Analipsi church, the village’s oldest one.

4. Vathy

Vathy looks more like a lagoon due to its protected inlet (having an opening of about 50 m.). It comprises two small communities: Exo [outer] Vathy at the inlet entrance with a small wharf for mooring boats; and Mesa [inner] Vathy in the nook of the cove next to cropland, sparse tree vegetation and vineyards. Distance from Chora: 21 km NE.

Must see

  • Chameni Limni [lost lake], a lagoon in the NE side of Astypalaia.
  • The ruins of a Minoan settlement and tower situated at the entrance to the cove.
  • Drakos cave, where you will see impressive stalagmite and stalactite formations. Access the cave by boat or on foot
  • Panagia Poulariani church, on the way to Vathy. It is built on a rock formation which looks like the Virgin Mary holding the Baby Jesus.

Nearby islands

From Maltezana cove take an excursion boat and visit Diaporia, Ligno, Chondro, Kounoupoi and Koutsomyri islands (SE) as well as Agia Kyriaki island and its beautiful beach (S). Farther away, to the NE of Astypalaia, visit Fokionisia; then Panormos and Katsagreli to the NW; Pontikousa and Ofidousa to the E; and finally Syrna, Katsikoulia, Tria Nisia, Meso, Stefania, and Zafora isles to the SE.

ZOON VAN SOPHIA WINT BIJ Tribeca Film Festival

New York.- By Vicki James Yiannias

The latest good news about Greek films. Continuing the forward movement toward international recognition of films by Greek directors in recent years, Elina Psykou’s Son of Sophia, won for Best International Narrative Feature at the Tribeca Film Festival. Congratulations, Elina!

Shown on April 21-23, and April 28, Greek director Elina Psykou’s second feature film after her celebrated debut film, The Eternal Return of AntonisParaskevas, (Hellenic Film Academy and Thessaloniki Film Festival award winner) played from and garnered applause from audiences. About a stoic 11-year-old boy, Misha, coming from Russia to Athens during the 2004 Olympic Games to live with his mother, the film is a mix of realism and Misha’s fantastical inner life full of fairytale-like inhabitants. Realism in his relationship with his mother, who has lived apart from him, in Griekenland, for two years, and the almost surreal strangeness of an eccentric stepfather whose personality is both old school and bizarre, a new home, and a new country. Son of Sophia’s storylines are ambitious. They are abundant and they raise questions; some are answered and many are not.

The GN was lucky to catch the excited Tsirkou for her answers to the following questions.

GN: A few scenes in Son of Sofia remind of David Lynch’s work. Is he one of your artistic influences?

EP: I certainly love David Lynch’s movies. I remember myself deciding that I want to become a film director after watching “Wild at Heart” on TV. Ik was 16 of 17 jaar oud, and I was so enthusiastic from being in that film’s world that I said I want to make movies like Lynch does, without being sure what this exactly means of course!

GN: Have any Greek film directors influenced your work?

EP: I really love a few Greek directors of previous generations, like Nikos Papatakis, Tonia Marketaki, GiorgosPanousopoulos, Stavros Tsiolis, and of course Theo Angelopoulos and PantelisVoulgaris and many others. I also love the work of a few contemporary directors and, as some of them are close friends of mine, I am proud of them and influenced by their work, natuurlijk! The cinema of your own country influences and inspires you, even if you don’t realize it.

GN: I’m assuming that Misha’s metamorphosis into a bear related to his mother’s teddy bear. What was the significance of the other metamorphoses, the zebra, crocodile, cow and wolf?

EP: About the zebra, I am interested in the presence of both black and white. Voor mij, it is symbolic – both colors exist, as do two points of view. There is no black, there is no white, there is no bad and no good, no wrong and right. As for the crocodile, it is a reference to Gena, a character in the animated Russian kids’ show “Cheburashka”, who also appears on Misha’s birthday cake. The cow refers to the fatted calf of the Prodigal Son parable, the one that Mr. Nikos teaches Misha. En tot slot, the wolf is the Big Bad Wolf, the famous fairytale character.

GN: What was the significance of Misha’s be carried aloft into the sky by balloons at the end of the film?

EP: Misha’s escape at the end is a direct reference to the Moscow Olympic Games closing ceremony back in the 1980. Misha, the mascot of the Games, flies off into the sky the same way. Despite this reference, I like that the movie has an open ending. The escape symbolizes Misha’s coming of age, the end of his childhood and also of his innocence. After the movie’s end, nothing will be the same, whatever this means.

GN: What did the unruly gang of sadistic young gay men represent?

EP: The gang of young boys is a different aspect of Greece. If one aspect, the old and conservative one, is represented by Mr. Nikos, the other, the new one, is represented by this gang. Both aspects are confused, not knowing where to go and whom to listen to… The gay thing is just an element, a realistic one, but not the main core of the young gang’s presence in the movie. What interests me is that these boys are lost in the city, without hope, relatives, expectations and home. En natuurlijk, their presence works as a statement for the city itself, an abandoned and isolated city.

Minister van Defensie James Mattis zegt Panos Kammenos Souda Bay Base kan enige uitbreiding nodig

Washington, DC.- (GreekNewsOnline, ANA-MPA)

Security and defense issues of mutual concern topped the agenda of the talks between U.S. Secretary of Defense James Mattis and Greece’s Minister of Defense Panos Kammenos at the Pentagon ,op vrijdag, according a readout by Pentagon Spokesperson Capt. Jeff Davis. These issues included trans-Mediterranean migration; terrorism; and instability in the Balkans, Northern Africa, en het Midden-Oosten.

Welcoming Minister Kammenos, General Mattis surprised everyone speaking about Souda Bay Base, saying “there may be some need to expand it a little bit”.

U.S. is considering Souda Bay as one of the alternatives for their operations in the Middle East, following the temporary closing of the Insirlik Base in Turkey after the military coup attempt.

Secretary Mattis welcomed Kammenos at the Pentagon praising him for his leadership in keeping Greek armed forces well equipped and ready and well funded.

“And certainly you mentioned Souda Bay here while we were getting our picture taken, key Naval facility that we share with you. We’re grateful for hosting us when we need to be in there, maybe some need to expand it a little bit. We’ll certainly look at that, but the largest deep water port in the Mediterranean, we’re very, very fortunate, it’s in the hands of capable NATO nation for the southern flank.”

PANOS KAMMENOS

Speaking to the Greek press, Defense Minister Panos Kammenos predicted the beginning of a new era in Greek-U.S. relations in defense. According to Kammenos, the new Trump administration understood the special role of the nation-state and the ability of states “with history and special ties to develop relations.”

Regarding Turkish provocations in the Aegean, Kammenos said there was agreement that “no new fronts” should be opened in the region. “We already have open fronts in Libya and Syria. Care must be taken so as not to create issues where there are none,"Zei hij, while noting that the U.S. side was aware of the Turkish activity.

Kammenos said that he had invited Mattis to visit Greece and that he had accepted the invitation.

The meeting focused on bilateral cooperation, NATO and the base in Souda and initiatives Greece can undertake in the broader Mediterranean region with third countries to create a “shield of stability and cooperation” with Israel, Cyprus, Egypte, Jordan and the United Arab Emirates to the south and east and with Bulgaria and Romania in the north.

r

The Secretary General of the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) is in Greece since last Tuesday as he accepted the invitation of the Greek Minister of Tourism Elena Kountoura. After meeting the Greek President Prokopis Pavlopoulos and the Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras, De heer. Rifai spoke at the workshop organized by the Ministry of Tourism under the title “Destination Greece – 365 days”.

“Greece is a succes story in tourism during the last 2-3 jaar, especially if we consider the special conditions and challenges the country had to face on all levels”, he stated to newmoney.gr.

Mr Rifai added that for an outside observer, with the geopolitical conditions in the wider region, the economic crisis and the refugee issue, he would expect Greece to go from bad to worse. Instead of that, there was an increase of arrivals on a percentage higher than the world average.

Voor de heer. Rifai what happened was a miracle as ther ewas the necessary political will as well as the positive impression around the world that Greece is a place where human rights are respected and regardless of the country’s problems. The Greeks turned the problem into an advantage for the tourism image of the country by projecting the Greek hospitality.

De heer. Rifai underlined the fact that there is no competition in the area when it comes to tourism, as the more people come to the Mediterranean, the more will come to Greece eventually. For the Secretary-General, the greatest asset for Greece is its people, as they make the visitors feel welcome.

The negative aspect of the country for Mr. Rifai is the low confidence Greece has demonstrated, as it should make more “fuzz” about its successes instead of what hasn’t been done yet.
